Stamping (metal processing)
Stamping (also known as pressing) is a process in which flat metal is placed in a blank or coil form into a punching machine, and the surface of the tool and die forms the metal into a mesh. Stamping includes various sheet metal forming manufacturing processes, such as stamping, blanking, embossing, bending, peeling, and casting using a machine press or stamping machine. This may be a single stage operation, where each stroke of the press produces the desired form on the sheet metal part, or it may occur through a series of stages. This process is usually performed on sheet metal, but it can also be used on other materials, such as polystyrene. Stamping is usually done on cold metal sheets.
Stamping operation
1. Bending-The material is deformed or bent along a straight line.
2. Flaking-The material bends along the curved line.
3. Relief-the material is stretched into shallow depressions. Mainly used to add decorative patterns.
4. Blank-a blank cut out from a piece of material, usually used for further processing.
5. Coin-The pattern is compressed or squeezed into the material. Traditionally used to make coins.
6. Drawing-Stretch the blank surface area into alternate shapes through controlled material flow.
7. Stretching-The surface area of the blank increases due to tension, and the edge of the blank does not move inward. Usually used to make smooth car body parts.
8. Ironing-the material is squeezed along the vertical wall and reduced in thickness. Used for beverage cans and ammunition boxes.
9. Reduction/Neck-Used to gradually reduce the diameter of the open end of the container or tube.
10. Curl-deform the material into a tubular profile. Door hinges are a common example.
11. Hem-Fold the edges onto yourself to increase thickness. The edge of the car door is usually hem.
Punching and cutting can also be performed in a punching machine. Progressive stamping is a combination of the above methods, and is completed continuously with a set of dies, and one piece of material is passed step by step.
